The Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum started as the Bocho Educational Museum in 1912 and was moved to its present location as a Yamaguchi Prefectural Educational Museum in 1917.
The museum was reconstructed and became a comprehensive museum with science and technology, astronomy, natural science, and humanities sections.

Science & Technology Exhibition Gallery

■2nd Floor Science & Technology Exhibition Gallery

Located on the 2nd floor, with the Robotics Area, Our Lives and Science, Industries of Yamaguchi Prefecture, Models for Future Cityscapes and other exhibitions, the Science & Technology Exhibition Gallery features an unmatched lineup when it comes to machine and electronics technology. The exhibits also features fun interactive technology that allows visitors learn everything from basic scientific theories to science and technology.

■3rd Floor Science & Technology Exhibition Gallery

The 3rd Floor Science & Technology Exhibition Gallery features such attractions as a Hands-On Learning Area, where visitors can see, touch and experience the displays, and the Yamaguchi Train Simulator, which features a 170-inch big screen where patrons can experience riding a train at full speed, complete with passing scenery and even the sounds and vibrations of the real thing.

Please note that when exhibitions are held on the third floor, these events take up the entire exhibition space. Consequently, during, as well as immediately before and after exhibitions, access to the exhibits of the 3rd Floor Science & Technology Exhibition Gallery is not allowed.

Earth Sciences Exhibition Gallery

Yamaguchi Prefecture has a wide range of geological features dating from the Paleozoic era up through the Cenozoic era. With its displays of fossils and rock materials from Yamaguchi Prefecture, the Earth Sciences Exhibition Gallery provides a glimpse into the diverse geological forms found in the prefecture. The gallery also features skeletal specimens of tyrannosaurs, Yabe’s giant deer (sinomegaceros yabei) and other intriguing exhibits.

Plant & Animal Life Exhibition Gallery

Located at the very western tip of the main Japanese island of Honshu, Yamaguchi Prefecture is surrounded on three sides by the ocean. The eastern part of the prefecture features the Western Chugoku Mountainous Area, which is over 1,300 meters in area, while the world famous Akiyoshidai karst plateau spreads out over the central region; from the mountains to the sea, visitors are treated to a vast treasure chest of natural scenery.

The six natural scenic spots that are most characteristic of the area have been reproduced in diorama form. Squeezed into highly-condensed diorama, the fields of all six present differences in elevation and seasonal variations, allowing visitors to experience the natural side of Yamaguchi Prefecture and gain an understanding of the mysteries of nature without going outside.

Historical Exhibition Gallery

The Historical Exhibition Gallery features special thematic exhibitions focusing on the history of Yamaguchi Prefecture. While the gallery has a wealth of materials related to influential figures from the latter part of the Edo period up through the Meiji era, visitors can also find exhibitions covering such subjects as the Ouchi family (Muromachi period - Period of Warring States) and the Mori family (Edo period). As a part of efforts to preserve materials, the exhibitions are updated 2 or 3 times a year; you can verify what is currently on exhibit by looking over the museum’s flyers or checking out the website.

Archeology Exhibition Gallery

The Archeology Exhibition Gallery has partnered with the History Section to present exhibitions focusing on artifacts that allows visitors to gain an understanding of the history of Yamaguchi Prefecture. What’s more, while the gallery has exhibitions that have themes unique to the Archeology Section, fundamentally the exhibitions here are of updated exhibitions in the History Section. meant to deepen visitors’ understanding

Astronomy Exhibition Gallery

The Astronomy Exhibition Gallery consists of six display areas: Models of Planets in Motion, the Solar System and Meteorites, the Makeup of the Universe, the History of Astronomy, Astronomy News and the Star-Filled Skies of Yamaguchi.

Beautiful illustrations and photos are used in each display area, where the relationship between the heavens, astronomy and mankind is introduced.

What’s more, several exhibitions such as the Niho Meteorite and the Kuga Meteorite from the Yamaguchi Museum collection are also displayed, allowing visitors to become more familiar with the universe.

Outdoor Exhibition Gallery

With the prefecture’s tree - the Japanese red pine - serving as a backdrop, the Outdoor Exhibition Gallery features exterior materials in a beautiful natural setting. There is a D60 steam locomotive that was used up until 1966 as well as box-like sarcophagus relics dating from the latter part of the Yayoi period to the first part of the Tumulus period and the Funakata sarcophagus, which served as a casket for a female chief who ruled the Yamaguchi Basin during the Tumulus period. The gallery also includes shellfish and other fossils that are available for observation.
